Digimon Adventure

This 20-minute feature creates some exposition for the first Digimon television series.  It’s beautifully animated, but it kind of lacks in sound design.  I don’t know… the Japanese have always made very different decisions with their production styles, while Americans are more practical.  Thankfully, this stands as an animated short (at least to me it does) and isn’t part of the other films.

I’m referring to the American re-edit dub known as Digimon The Movie.

Joke poster.

I love the series, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a different situation when you have a lighthearted show for kids and throw those voice actors into a movie that, in my opinion, should be taken a little more seriously.  And I feel the same about the opposite.  I wouldn’t be able to take the original Japanese series seriously, even if it’s uncensored.

8/10

And in case you were wondering what I would give Digimon The Movie…

4/10

Censorship sucks.  And they moved around a lot, plus none of the three original features were meant to connect together.  But they managed to retain some of lightheartedness that I enjoyed about the television series and the music was catchy.  Oh, and they added better SFX.
